Preventing VMware Player from prompting to install software updates

Purpose

VMware Player, by default, automatically checks for software updates and prompts you to install them. This article provides the steps to disable VMware Player from automatically checking for updates.

Resolution

To disable VMware Player from automatically checking for updates:
  1. Go to File > Player Preferences.
  2. Deselect Check for product updates on startup.
  3. Click OK
You can also accomplish this by modifying the user preference file for VMware Player.

To edit the user preferences file:
  1. Locate and open the preferences file. The default locations are:

    • Windows 7 and Vista – C:\Users\[username]\VMware\AppData\Roaming\VMware\preferences.ini
    • Windows XP – C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\VMware\VMware\preferences.ini
    • Linux – ~/.vmware/preferences

  2. Find this line within the file:

In VMware Player 3.x and earlier releases:

    pref.vmplayer.autoSoftwareUpdatePermission =

    In VMware Player 4.x:

    pref.autoSoftwareUpdatePermission =

  3. Change the value within quotes to:

    DENY

Note: You can toggle DENY to ALLOW to enable automatic software update checks.
